Security
What keeps it safe
An alarm and armed response on every unit, cameras across the yard, and one person who holds every key.

- Jane holds every keyThe keys to every unit stay with Jane. When you need your things, tell her when you’re coming and she’ll open up for you.
- Every unit alarmed, on armed responseEach unit is on its own alarm, and a trip brings armed response out to the property.
- Cameras and floodlightsThe blocks are covered by cameras and lit after dark.
- Checked in personJane looks in on the units herself. It’s what customers mention most in their reviews.
Insurance
Dukes doesn’t insure what’s in your unit. Goods are stored at your own risk, as the lease says, so arrange cover in your own name if you want it. Many household policies already extend to goods in storage; your broker can tell you.
How it works
From first message to moving in
There’s no online booking and no card to enter. You talk to Jane, look at a unit, and take it if it suits you.
Tell us what you have
WhatsApp, ring or send the form. Say what you’re storing and we’ll suggest a size to come and look at.
Come and see it
Drive out during opening hours and stand in the unit itself. It settles the size question on the spot.
Sign, month to month
No deposit and no admin fee. First month up front, then one month’s notice whenever you want to leave.
Move in
Back up to the door and unload. Jane locks up, keeps the key, and opens up again when you need something.
Rent is quoted per unit when you enquire, for the size you actually need.

Finding Dukes

East of Pietermaritzburg, in Bishopstowe. It’s a rural property, so a street name typed into your phone won’t find it. Use the directions button, or the plus code below.
Opening hours
Closed on Sundays and public holidays. Jane keeps the keys, so let her know when you’re coming.
Questions
Before you decide
How do I work out which size I need?
Tell us roughly what you’re storing and we’ll tell you what it needs. You’re also welcome to come out and look at all three sizes before you decide.
Who has the keys?
Jane does. She keeps the keys to every unit. When you want to get to your things, tell her when you’re coming and she’ll open up for you.
How secure is the facility?
Each unit is alarmed and on armed response, and the yard is covered by cameras and floodlights. Jane holds the keys and checks on the units herself, which is what customers mention most in their reviews.
When can I get to my things?
During opening hours: 8am to 5pm on weekdays and 8am to 2pm on Saturdays. We’re closed on Sundays and public holidays. Because Jane keeps the keys, send a WhatsApp or ring to say when you’re coming. If you need a time outside those hours, ask.
Are my belongings insured?
No. Goods are stored at your own risk and Dukes doesn’t insure the contents of your unit. If you want cover, arrange it in your own name before you move in. Your household policy may already extend to goods in storage, so ask your broker.
Am I locked into a contract?
No. The lease runs month to month and you give one month’s notice when you want to leave. There’s no deposit and no admin fee. The first month is paid before you move in.
Can I store paperwork and files?
You can, but check on paper regularly if it’s staying for a long time. White ants will eventually find paper and cardboard in KwaZulu-Natal, even in a dry brick unit. Keep boxes off the floor and look in on them now and then.
Do businesses use Dukes?
Yes. Alongside household goods we store stock, files, display kit and equipment for local businesses, some of them for years. The 18 m² and 24 m² units suit anyone who needs room to walk around pallets.
Can I come and see the place first?
Please do. Ring or WhatsApp and come out during opening hours. Standing in the unit is the quickest way to know whether the size is right.
What if I need more space later?
Ring us. People move up a size or take a second unit fairly often. It depends what’s free at the time, so ask early instead of on moving day.
How do I pay?
By EFT or debit order, monthly in advance. Debit order is easiest for everyone. We’ll send you the details once you’ve chosen a unit.
Not allowed in a unit
- Flammable, corrosive or toxic substances
- Explosives
- Firearms
- Anything obtained illegally
- Perishable food
- Animals
From the Dukes lease agreement. Nobody may live in a unit either. Anything else is generally fine; ask if you’re not sure.
